2015 International Day of People with Disabilities (I-DAY)

I-DAY is a United Nations sanctioned day that aims to promote awareness and understanding of disability issues and encourage support for the dignity, rights and wellbeing of people with disability.

House With No Steps The DISH hosts a ‘Youth Networking’ event. Toby Halligan, an award-winning comedian, was the MC. Participants spent three minutes speaking to another person from the community or representative from a club/group/organisation, then moved to the next person; emulating the methods applied to speed networking. $3,500
Technical Aid to the Disabled ACT Inc Walk 4 Ability, a 5km or 1km walk or ride around the central basin of Lake Burley Griffin, was designed to promote disability inclusion while also advocating for public accessibility with a wheelchair challenge hosted by the Canberra Chargers, the ACT wheelchair basketball team. Friends of Brain Injured Children and Boundless Playground joined in the Walk 4 Ability event on Saturday 28 November 2015. $5,000
Richmond Fellowship ACT Inc Fresh Mess aims to address the poor health outcomes for those living with severe and persistent mental health issues by promoting good health and a range of healthy lifestyle choices.
The funds allowed Fresh Mess cooperative members to celebrate a successful year of participation in the running of the Fresh Mess program. The event celebrated the supportive and inclusive environment created by cooperative members to each other and provided a Christmas event for members who may otherwise be excluded or isolated from participating due to ongoing mental illness.
The aim of the Christmas Celebration was to create a relaxed and inclusive environment, free from the stress often encountered over the Christmas period, particularly for those living with a mental illness.

Ms Nipuni Wijewickrema (individual) The GG’s Flowers team run a series of flower classes that enable people with special needs to make their own floral arrangement and take it home. Participants were able to choose their colours and design and make it with their friends. At the conclusion, the students were given a chance to share a snack and celebrate their creations. They walked away with the satisfaction of creating their own masterpiece in a supported learning environment with a business that genuinely cares about people with special needs. $3,050

The Cultural Grants encourage and support ACT-based community organisations to apply for financial support, in the form of a once-only grant to assist in a program or event that will promote wider understanding of the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people living in the ACT community.

Capital Woodland and Wetlands Conservation Association Inc The Jerrabomberra Wetlands Bush Tucker Garden will be located in the car park at the Jerrabomberra Wetlands offices. It will provide a welcoming display of local plants in a garden carefully designed around an important wetland animal with significance to the Indigenous community. Associated interpretation signs will also be included. This garden is within the context of developing a strong community engagement program for the wetlands with Indigenous interpretation an important part of this. The garden will be designed and constructed in collaboration with Thunderstone and Culture on the Move, who are already committed to working in partnership with the Trust to increase Indigenous awareness at Jerrabomberra Wetlands which was once a very important floodplain area. $4,400
Relationships Australia Canberra and Region Inc Relationships Australia Dhunlung Yarra Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Service will work with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Elders and respected members of the community, and members of the Galambany Circle Sentencing Court to further develop the principles of restorative practice and how it can be used to address grief and loss within the community. $4,920
Tuggeranong Community Arts Association The main aim of this project is to produce a documentary film which will capture the life and times of the region’s most senior living Ngunnawal Elder, Aunty Agnes Shea. The film will allow current community members to understand the local Aboriginal community and their significant ties to this region. It will highlight the important role that these people have played and will continue to play in our cultural landscape. $5,000
Individual The Ngambri Cultural Camp project will involve building and maintaining relationships. It will initiate further networking in the community, enhance unity and provide opportunities to rekindle old relationships and develop new ones. $2,500
Individual To develop an ABC book for children called ‘W is for Wiradjuri’. The book uses Wiradjuri words and English as well as photos, and some illustrations by a Wiradjuri artist. It would be wonderful if every child in school knew at least one Aboriginal word. $3,000

The Scholarship Grants encourage and support ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents to undertake study and training which will enhance and support their employment prospects in the ACT and further develop their skills and qualifications.

Artsound Inc Produce and broadcast radio programs focusing on issues such as health, exercise, relaxation and wellbeing for seniors as part of the ArtSound Silver Memories internet radio network. Canberra Potters' Society Inc The Pottery For All seniors’ only class will teach students to make functional and decorative ceramic ware with an experienced teacher. Over two terms (16 weeks) students will learn hand building, throwing, mould making, surface decoration, glazing and firing. $3,000
Council on the Ageing (COTA)ACT The ‘Mature-Aged Jobseeker Support Program’ will provide support to mature-aged jobseekers residing in Canberra to get back into the workforce, followed by a mentoring program and job club. The Brite Notes Brite Notes performances at aged-care facilities throughout the Canberra district bring joy into the lives of many residents who are otherwise isolated and have very little to stimulate them to exercise their faculties. They demonstrate as seniors themselves that they can be bright and active and have fun while sharing an enjoyable experience with others. This lifts individual’s spirits and the collective spirit of the community. Performances often reignite very happy memories and associations from the residents' past. $4,950
Tuggeranong 55 Plus Club Inc The ‘Introduction to Art for Seniors’ course aims to inspire and prepare seniors to create their own works independent of the class and will provide a catalyst to form an ongoing art group. The participants will be introduced to all art mediums, colour and textures, music and the use of negative spaces. $1,780
Weston Creek Citizens' Council Inc (known as Weston Creek Community Council) auspiced by Fetherston Gardens Friends ‘Horticulture Workshops for Seniors’ – A program of eight one-hour horticulture workshops for residents of Uniting Care Mirinjani Aged Care in Weston Creek. The residents will participate in activities involving plant establishment and care though guided tuition. The program will be focused around the capabilities of the residents and adjusted to their needs as necessary. $1,000
Woden Seniors Inc The ‘Bridge tuition for seniors’ project aims to develop a long-term and sustainable program of tuition in the card game of bridge.  A consultant develops training courses and support materials that can be implemented by dedicated volunteer instructors to small groups of seniors wishing to learn the game. $1,500

The 2015–16 ACT Women Grants Program

The 2015–16 Women’s Safety Grants program was a joint initiative between the Justice and Community Safety Directorate and Community Services Directorate. The grants program provided funding to groups and organisations to develop activities that advance the objectives of the ACT Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Strategy 2011–2017 so that women and children are safe, diverse groups of women are supported, and early intervention and prevention programs for children and young people are a priority.

In April 2015 the Attorney-General announced the allocation of $100,000 under the confiscated assets program to be combined with the Women’s Grants Program to allow a more sizeable and flexible program targeted to awareness and prevention of domestic violence. A total of $310,000 (GST exclusive) in funding was available in the 2015–16 grants round for projects in three categories.

Early Intervention projects: for children and young people at greater risk of becoming involved in domestic violence as adults, including children who have been exposed to domestic violence.

Engagement projects: that engaged with business, real estate/financial advisors and legal services to support women who have experienced domestic violence. This was targeted at women in the post crisis phase who may be at risk of homelessness or facing ongoing abuse through property settlement, child custody or other legal/financial issues.

Diverse experiences of violence projects: that targeted diverse experiences of violence such as newly- arrived migrant women, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander women, women with disability and women from the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex community.

AIDS Action Council of the ACT The Mentors in Violence Prevention Program for the Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Intersex and Queer (LGBTIQ) Community focuses on the prevention of intimate partner and sexual violence in LGBTIQ communities. It utilises a bystander approach to prevention where program participants are empowered bystanders who can confront, interrupt or prevent violence. The program seeks to enlist all people in the fight against violence by equipping them with the skills to be effective bystanders. Workshops empower participants to identify themselves as bystanders with the ability to confront, interrupt and prevent gender-based violence. It aims to raise awareness of participants about violence within the LGBTIQ community; challenge thinking by countering mainstream messages about gender, sex and violence; open dialogue by creating a safe environment for participants to share their opinions and experiences about these issues; and inspire leadership by empowering participants with options to confront violent situations. $31,260
Beryl Women Inc The domestic/family violence booklet and education package provides crisis support to women and children escaping domestic/family violence within a trauma informed framework, through:
  • developing a professional website that reflects best practice; informing women and the community, through our forty years of experience in the area of domestic violence
  • establishing a booklet for women entering the service that can also be placed on the website as a community resource. This booklet will cover the basics of what women in crisis will need to know including essential immediate safety and security information, normal responses and feelings, definitions of domestic violence with lists and contacts of useful organisations as a starting point
  • translating the booklets into several languages. The choice of languages will be based on the statistical information of women accessing the service. These will also be available electronically via the website.

Integrated Cultures ACT Inc The Positive Relationships project will encourage young people to explore their values and what they look for in a relationship, to explore how to communicate respectfully, and will offer young people some tools to help resolve conflict. This is Not a 'Wife Beater' Produce two videos – one video will be about 8–10 minutes in length, and the other will be a shortened version of the first video about 2–3 minutes in length – featuring women, children and men from a diverse range of backgrounds and sectors of the Canberra community. These videos will explain why it matters how we speak about intimate partner and family violence. The participants, including children and young people, will explain what it means to be a ‘respecter’—a person who, through their promotion of a language of respect in relationships, and their calling out of disrespectful language and behaviour, contributes to a culture in which respectful relationships are promoted and intimate partner and family violence is no longer minimised and condoned. $9,884

The 2015–16 Audrey Fagan Women’s Enrichment Grants

The Audrey Fagan Women’s Enrichment Grants provide funding to encourage and enable young ACT women to develop or enhance their skills and knowledge in their area of passion. In 2015–16, seven young Canberra women were awarded grants to complete projects in their chosen areas of internationally recognised study, veterinary science, health education, sports and the arts.

Women’s Return to Work Grants

The ACT Women's Return to Work Grants Program is an ACT Government initiative providing women returning to the paid workforce with financial assistance, information and resources to assist them to reach this goal. Individual grants of up to $1,000 are available to women who have been absent from the workforce for more than 12 months due to caring responsibilities, and who meet the program criteria.

The Domestic Violence Support Group Program

The Domestic Violence Support Group Program enhances the wellbeing of women who have experienced domestic violence by supporting their capacity to rebuild self-efficacy and safe social worlds. In recognition of the diverse access needs of Canberra women affected by domestic violence and the different stages they are at in their recovery, three groups are offered to provide a range of supports during ACT school terms.

Canberra Institute of Technology The Drumbeat Program for year 12 students combines the therapeutic potential of musical expression with a range of social learning outcomes including emotional control, improved relationships and increased self-esteem. The program utilises drumming to engage participants and explore commonalities between making music together as a group and developing healthy relationships. The program was developed to combine the benefits of the group drumming process with cognitive behavioural therapy so that young people can transfer some of the lessons from the drum circle to their everyday lives. $1,496
Girls Rock! Canberra Girls Rock! Canberra (GR!C) aims to empower young girls (ages 10–17) through a week-long series of workshops that encourage creativity, self-expression and teamwork through music. The inaugural session of GR!C was run at Ainslie Arts Centre 11–16 January 2016. $1,152

Individual Set up a young people’s bereavement network in Canberra, for youth aged 16–25. This service would allow young people who have experienced the isolation of profound loss to find support, guidance and friendship through networking with others in a similar situation. If a family member has died from cancer, young people can gain similar support from Canteen, but individuals whose loved ones died through other means, or are over 24, have limited organised support in the ACT. $1,500

UN Youth ACT ‘Voice National Finals’ is a challenging public competition for students from around the country in Years 7 to 10. Delegates are asked to propose creative solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues, from refugee crises to climate change to global economic inequality. In 2016, the conference will also incorporate educational workshops and speaker sessions. $1,500
Woden Community Service West Woden Field Beats is a chance for young people to showcase their talents, in music and dance, to the wider community. Past events have been successful at breaking down barriers between Westfield Security, young people and ACT Police. It also provides the opportunity for various community service providers to provide information in an informal manner to young people and families. $1,500

The YouTube Competition provides an alternate media method to engage young people in the Canberra community and raise awareness of issues that affect them. This grant program provides funding for activities that promote participation in the ACT community.
