Laying the foundations for the future of education

The upcoming ACT Budget will providing funding for early outcomes of the Future of Education community conversation through measures aimed at empowering learning professionals in ACT schools.

After students themselves, the single most significant factor in the outcomes achieved in schools is the expertise and professionalism of the teachers facilitating learning – the evidence is clear on this point and has been repeated by ACT students, teachers and school leaders, parents and carers and the wider community.

That’s why the Budget will provide $9.2 million over four years to make an immediate start on providing the best possible teaching in every classroom, every day, as well as enabling continued development of longer term strategic reforms.

The government is investing in teacher capability in literacy and numeracy and building better links with the University of Canberra where many of ACT teachers gain their initial and post graduate qualifications. This university partnership will also provide teachers with opportunities for professional learning through research collaboration, growing the University of Canberra as a centre for excellence in teaching.

In this budget the ACT Government will also implement a new teacher mentor program where school leaders will be provided with better training in mentoring and supporting teachers who at beginning their careers in one of the ACT’s public schools.

Canberra families want the best education for their kids, and that’s what the ACT’s world class public schools deliver. With an additional 1,340 students set to join over 47,000 public school students, the Government will invest $54.3 million to ensure local public schools keep getting better as Canberra grows.

The government will deliver the equivalent of 66 additional learning professionals and support staff for local public schools and lock in support for students with disability, boosting the delivery of quality education for Canberra’s young people.

The ACT Government is proud of its investments to maintain our nation-leading education system.

Hiring more teachers and delivering more support for students with a disability will see our already great schools get even better.

With the 2018 Budget the ACT Government is growing services for our growing city.
