Driving gender equity in sport for women and girls

Released 03/08/2018

A Women in Sport Forum will be held on Thursday 9 August to continue the conversation, and the important work underway to achieve gender equity in sport. This initiative comes as part of the greater efforts towards social change to address gender inequality in the ACT.

On Thursday seven impressive speakers will discuss the changing landscape for women and girls in sport, and explore future opportunities for how local clubs and associations can adapt to meet the needs of female athletes. Speakers include:

  • Author and journalist, Angela Pippos
  • Inaugural AFLW Premiership Coach, Rebecca Goddard
  • Former Matildas player, Julie Murray
  • AFLW player, Moana Hope
  • Former Olympic swimmer, journalist and sports administrator, Nicole Livingstone
  • International sponsorship expert, Vickie Saunders; and
  • Host, Olympic medalist and basketballer, Lauren Jackson.

The Women in Sport Forum is part of the government’s commitment to support female athletes and to promote greater leadership opportunities for women, to address gender inequality in sport in the 2018-19 Budget and forms part of the ACT Women’s Plan.

The Women in Sport Forum will focus on bringing the community and sporting institutions together with the ACT Government to explore practical ideas to further enhance access to sports, on both a professional and recreational level, for women and girls in Canberra.

With already 160 tickets sold and an impressive list of accomplished women lined up to speak, it’s great to see that so many people feel as strongly as I do about the importance of equity in sport.

The ACT continues to lead the nation in this work, removing cultural and structural barriers to women and girls getting involved in sport. In every sport and at every level – elite athletes, athletes with a disability, administration, juniors, school students, parents and sporting clubs – there are opportunities to support the participation and empowerment of women and girls.

The Women in Sport Forum will take place on Thursday 9 August from 4.30pm at the National Convention Centre. I encourage Canberrans who play or love sport to come along, and be part of the conversation.
