Dickson and Phillip sports pavilions upgraded and more inclusive

Released 28/06/2018

Improvements to pavilions at the Dickson and Phillip ovals have been completed giving a more inclusive and comfortable experience for all participants.

One key part of the government’s election commitment to pursue gender equity in sport was in the development of female friendly guidelines (attached) for sporting pavilions and these upgrades bring Dickson and Phillip up to scratch with those standards.

Our commitment was for $500,000 towards these upgrades and we are on track to exceed that amount.

The 2018 ACT budget also allocated $3.8 million to upgrades at GIO Stadium which will include bringing change rooms in line with these requirements.

The two ageing pavilions have undergone a facelift both inside and out.

The Dickson pavilion on Antill Street is over 50 years old and now has a new roof with the removal of asbestos eave sheeting, heaters installed in the change rooms and toilets and two new disability parking spaces.

A local visual arts teacher from Daramalan College, Mr John Vukovic has also painted a mural on the wall giving it wonderful colour and featuring a range of sporting activities.

The canteen is also more open with a new stainless steel food preparation area to assist volunteers and sporting groups when preparing and selling food and drink.

The Phillip pavilion on Ainsworth Street, over 40 years old, has also received significant improvements.

These include improvements to the female toilets, new LED lighting, new flooring and a fresh coat of paint.

Timers have also been installed on all light and heater switchers with a more efficient hot water system all helping to reduce the carbon footprint.

The ACT Government consulted with user groups of both pavilions including Royals Rugby Union Club, Woden Valley Rams Rugby League club, Ultimate Frisbee, Corroboree Little Athletics, Capital Football, AFLNSW/ACT and the Canberra Region and Community Rugby League before work commenced with the refurbishments completed earlier this month.
