St Anthony’s Early Learning Centre meeting the needs of community

Released 29/08/2017

Today I visited St Anthony’s Catholic Primary School in Wanniassa to officially open their new early learning centre.

St Anthony's Early Learning Centre provides a preschool program for children in the suburbs of Wanniassa, Kambah, Oxley, Monash, Greenway and Bonython. The centre is a safe, welcoming environment for learning and I was particularly happy to see the thought given to how the design and fit out of the centre had adopted contemporary play-based learning practice.

As part of our initiative to support non-government preschools to provide high quality early childhood education, the ACT community through a government grant contributed $500,000 toward the total cost to build the new early learning centre.

The early years of education play a crucial role in shaping and developing our children in the years to come. Quality early childhood education and care provides children better preparation for life socially and emotionally, in education and in employment.

In the ACT over 95% of children attend a preschool program before kindergarten, which is very good news for our children and our community. Getting education right in the early years can set children up to thrive throughout school and their adult lives.

Quality early childhood education is important to this government and we are working to see how we can better support the sector as a whole to provide more opportunities for our families to be able to access quality early childhood education.

The government is currently undertaking a conversation with the community about the future of education in the ACT, which will include the development of a longer-term Early Childhood Strategy. If you would like to join in the conversation and share your ideas, visit www.yoursay.act.gov.au/futureofeducation.
