New sports stars inducted into UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra’s Hall of Fame

Released 30/08/2017

Today I attended UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra as part of their 30th birthday celebrations and congratulated five new inductees into the college’s sporting Hall of Fame.

More commonly known as Lake Ginninderra College in the community, the school has produced a long line of sporting stars at the local, national and international level. Many past students that have represented Australia in basketball, football, swimming, volleyball, water polo, archery, tennis, gymnastics and athletics have all called UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra their home during their schooling years.

Previous Hall of Fame inductees include Australian national basketball players Lauren Jackson, Liz Camage and Patty Mills, Australian national football players Craig Moore and Heather Garriock, and Australian Olympic swimmers Linley Frame, Adam Pine and Petria Thomas to name a few.

The school’s incredible list of international sporting stars and household names can be linked to their strong partnership with the Australian Institute of Sport, which was formed immediately after the college opened in 1987. This partnership supports the education of school-aged sports scholarship holders from interstate but also from talented young local stars.

As many school-aged athletes have national sporting commitments that make it challenging to consistently attend school, UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra has always been proactive in supporting these students with extra tutorials, opportunities to catch up on missed work and other flexible ways to learn to ensure they have every opportunity to excel academically as well.

Today had a special significance for one of the new inductees, former Australian basketball star Shane Heal. Not only was he one of the very first scholarship holders and graduates of the program 30 years ago, but his daughter is now attending the college in the same program today.

Congratulations again to all the new inductees and to UC Senior Secondary College Lake Ginninderra on honouring this new group into school sporting history.

The five new Hall of Fame inductees are:

  • Shane Heal (basketball)
  • Nat Hurst (basketball)
  • Amy Wilson (football)
  • Louise Ellery (track and field)
  • Christie Mokoputu (volleyball)
