New outdoor spaces open up new learning experiences

Released 25/07/2017

Today I joined the Turner School community to open their new Outdoor Learning Spaces.

Learning isn’t just confined to the traditional classroom. While we all know students do a lot of learning in the classroom it is important that we also provide suitable outdoor spaces for play and learning.

Students should be able to learn anywhere and have fun while doing so.

The new spaces at Turner School provide natural movement between indoors and outdoors. They support inquiry learning and were designed to be calm and inclusive spaces. Children can eat lunch as well as participate in a range of organised activities and classes, and they are spaces where the sensory needs of students can be met.

The courtyards were designed to have multiple surfaces and spaces, with new repaved areas and new small timber decks. The spaces also include adjustable dividers that enhance flexibility.

The design was heavily influenced by the students, as well as parents and teachers, who provided ideas to inform the design. The results show with spaces that meet the needs of all students at the school.

In total the government has invested $159,864 to provide these new learning spaces.

I am sure the spaces will be truly appreciated by the children, staff and all of the school community with lots of learning and fun to take place in them.
