Giants confirm CBR as home of women’s sport

Released 25/07/2017

Canberra is the home of women’s sport this weekend when we welcome the Giants national super netball and women’s AFL sides for their first home games in the ACT.

The AFL-W side’s first game in Canberra is on Saturday at Manuka Oval against the Western Bulldogs while their netball partners face the Adelaide Thunderbirds at the AIS Arena on Sunday. The two Giants matches anchor a big week for women’s sport in the ACT, from grassroots through to our elite athletes.

Canberra’s sporting landscape is one of the most diverse and inclusive of any city in Australia. As a community, we have backed the Capitals and Canberra United to championships while individuals like Caroline Buchanan and Mel Breen continue to shine on the international stage as proud, female Canberrans.

We are a small city, but we continually punch above our weight in the sporting arena and our teams enjoy passionate support from Canberra as a result.

Providing a link for our grassroots, junior girls to progress through to elite competition is something Canberra’s sporting organisations continue to enthusiastically pursue. On Friday afternoon girls aged five and up are encouraged to visit Reid Oval for an AFL Come and Try clinic. Big numbers are expected to show interest in the clinics and bookings are recommended.

The Giants Netball side will meet and greet its new support crew at a fans open day at the Lyneham Netball Centre on Saturday afternoon. For more information on the Giants Netball open day visit giantsnetball.com.au/giants-netball-events.

I am also pleased to see the Canberra Giants settle into their home here in the ACT as part of the Australian Netball League. The Canberra Giants will face the Southern Force twice this weekend, first at the SolarHub in Dickson on Saturday and straight after the GWS game at the AIS Arena on Sunday.
