The Early Morning Centre on Northbourne Avenue in Civic provides homeless Canberrans with crucial support each weekday morning and will now expand its operating hours thanks to additional funding provided by the ACT Government.
As Minister for Housing and Suburban Development, it was great to be asked to launch these expanded services today and support the incredible work done by Uniting Care with these most vulnerable members of our community.
Under a 2017-18 Budget initiative that provides an additional $100,000 per annum, the Centre will now open for an additional two and half hours each weekday, extending its operating hours until 2pm.
The additional opening hours will enhance the Early Morning Centre’s capacity to provide services to Canberrans at risk of, or experiencing homelessness. They will also enable the Centre to reach out to those who may not currently be visiting the Centre, including women and children, ensuring those most in need receive the assistance they require.
Uniting care has also received a one-off grant of $50,000 to undertake business development activities in regard to the Centre, including an extended service delivery model and business plan.
The Early Morning Centre makes an invaluable contribution to the wellbeing and empowerment of its guests through the provision of free food, showers and lockers. It also provides a safe environment for people to build relationships and be connected to service providers.
This initiative is another example of ACT Government’s commitment to supporting those most in need in the Canberra Community. We have committed this funding through to the end of June 2019 and I look forward to watching the Early Morning Centre evolve over the next few years supported by these additional resources.
Continued support of the Early Morning Centre was an item of the Parliamentary Agreement between the ACT Greens and ACT Labor.
