Canberra GIANTS providing a new platform for local netball talent

Released 25/07/2017

It’s great to join with Netball ACT to launch the Canberra GIANTS who will compete in this year’s new-look Australian Netball League (ANL) commencing on 18 February.

Australian netball has evolved over the last six months, headlined by the new Suncorp Super Netball league and the associated start-up of three new teams, including GIANTS Netball who will play two matches in Canberra in March and May.

As part of these changes Netball ACT and Netball NSW have strengthened their partnership, leading to the launch of the Canberra GIANTS today.

The Canberra GIANTS, with players based in Canberra and Sydney, provides a strong underpinning program for GIANTS Netball under the guidance of co-coaches Maria Lynch in Sydney and Sharyn Hill in the ACT.

For local athletes, who are members of both the Canberra GIANTS program and the associated local training squad, this is a great opportunity that exposes them to elite coaching, on-court training opportunities and high performance support services.

With each of the Suncorp Super Netball teams having a direct affiliate in the ANL, it also gives talented Canberra players like Georgia Clayden, Leigh Kalsbeek and Shannon O’Connor a direct pathway to the top level.

Netball is a massive participation sport in Canberra, with passionate participants and great local associations supporting grass roots participation.  Yet for all this, many of our athletes have not pushed through to elite domestic or even international competition.

The Suncorp Super Netball is an exciting new chapter for netball in Australia and through the Canberra GIANTS and Netball ACT’s partnership with Netball NSW it also presents an exciting new opportunity for netball in Canberra and our region.

I wish the Canberra GIANTS every success when their 2017 ANL season commences with a match against the NSW Waratahs in Sydney on 18 February.
