Better schools in Gungahlin

Released 25/07/2017

Kids in Harrison, Gold Creek, Bonner and Palmerston will benefit from better local schools thanks to the 2017-18 Budget.

The ACT Government is committed to building more schools across Canberra and investing in our existing ones so kids can always find a place at a good local school close to home.

Public school enrollments in the north of Canberra have grown by about 53 per cent over the last five years. That is why this budget will expand capacity of Harrison School, Gold Creek School, Neville Bonner Primary School and Palmerston District Primary School.

Our public schools are the hubs of local communities and I am very keen to see these spaces continue to be used by the surrounding neighbourhood and local groups.

This is why the 2017-18 Budget will also increase the scope of the new proposed North Gungahlin school, to include a community use oval which is due to open at the start of 2019. The Government will provide$1.972 million to deliver this additional recreation and sporting ground for the North Gungahlin community.

We are also exploring options for a new school in East Gungahlin to continue to meet the needs of this growing population as well as delivering valuable community infrastructure and public benefits to the community.

The ACT Government’s $24 million investment in better schools for Gungahlin is further proof of our commitment to providing high quality public education to our students and accessible facilities for local communities.

The 2017-18 ACT Budget will see the Government delivering on the commitments we took to the 2016 election on the areas that matter most to Canberrans. In addition to delivering better schools for our kids, we will invest in better health care through our 10-year health plan and better services for our suburbs, while making the right investments to renew our city and maintain a strong local economy.
