Not such a long way to the top for public housing renewal

Released 25/07/2017

The largest renewal of the ACT ‘s public housing stock since self-government is well under way, with about  85 per cent of the government’s target of 1288 new dwellings in various stages of the procurement process.

More than 120 new public housing dwellings are already occupied, 465 are in process of being constructed or purchased and due diligence and early design work is underway for about another 500 dwellings in various locations around Canberra.

The ACT has the most significant social housing system in Australia, almost double the national average of dwellings per capita.

The ACT Government has made it a key priority to modernise and improve the territory’s public housing stock so that more residents can have appropriate, comfortable, convenient and efficient housing options.

Today I visited the site of 40 new high-quality townhouses on Bon Scott Crescent that are under construction and due to be completed by the middle of next year.  The new homes feature a mix of adaptable units suitable for people with disabilities and dwellings that meet Liveable Housing Australia’s gold standard to allow people to age in place.

The development of new modern, sustainable homes, like these two-bedroom townhouses, is allowing the ACT Government to replace aged, inefficient public housing.

The ACT Government’s $550 million commitment for 1288 new public housing dwellings over five years is also boosting the construction sector by creating more than 2500 jobs over the life of the program.
