New running group encourages beginners to reach for 5km

Released 02/05/2016

A new running group supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in Canberra to achieve their health and fitness goals was officially launched today with a run around Lake Burley Griffin.

I’m delighted that the first session of the Canberra Deadly Runners was held this afternoon, with the group up and running thanks to a $23,000 grant from the ACT Government as part of the 2016 Indigenous Sport Partnered Programs (ISPP) funding round.

The ISPP funds new sport or active recreation programs for the local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community, and the Canberra Deadly Runners group at Lake Burley Griffin is an exciting new offering from Georgia Gleeson, founder of the Queanbeyan Deadly Runners.

Since its establishment in 2014 Queanbeyan Deadly Runners has been a great success, and the new group will offer prospective runners with a new location and session times to make it easier to get involved. By focusing on beginners who are hoping to improve their health and fitness through ongoing participation, Canberra Deadly Runners supports new runners to be able to run five kilometres over eight to 10 weeks.

The Canberra Deadly Runners will meet three times a week (5:15pm on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays) at Reconciliation Place to run around Lake Burley Griffin.

I encourage anyone in our local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community interested in improving their health and fitness to come along to one of the sessions. Whether you’re aiming to run 5km, or even a marathon, come down and give the Canberra Deadly Runners group a go to improve your fitness in a friendly and supportive environment.

The Queanbeyan Deadly Runners, under the auspices of the Indigenous Marathon Foundation (IMF), received funding through the 2016 Indigenous Sports Partnered Programs (ISPP) to assist with the establishment of the Canberra Deadly Runners. Funding for the ISPP has been provided to the ACT Government through the Commonwealth’s Indigenous Advancement Strategy (IAS). To register your interest for the Canberra Deadly Runners or the Queanbeyan Deadly Runners, or if you have any questions, please contact the Queanbeyan Deadly Runners at queanbeyandeadlyrunners@gmail.com or visit their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/DeadlyRunners.
