New Chisholm public housing ready for tenants

Released 25/07/2017

In a milestone for the ACT Government’s $550 million program to renew our public housing stock, the Public Housing Renewal Taskforce today handed over 20 new townhouses in Chisholm to Housing ACT.

The townhouses represent the future for the ACT’s public housing tenants – better and more secure homes that meet their needs, now and in the future.

It is the first comprehensive, from the ground up, Public Housing Renewal Taskforce construction project delivered to Housing ACT and demonstrates the Government’s progress in replacing outdated, high-density properties with new, smaller-scale quality accommodation scattered throughout Canberra.

The new accommodation will be more energy efficient and improve accessibility for tenants, as well as reduce maintenance costs.

We know that access to appropriate housing with good amenity is essential for good health, education and employment outcomes. Delivering this means people are better placed to be a part of their communities.

It has been really encouraging to see the support that the local community has shown around this housing development and for that I would like to thank all who have contributed to this project.

The Chisholm development also sees the Public Housing Renewal Taskforce approach the half-way point of its five-year program to provide up to 1,288 new homes for public housing tenants.

In addition to the social benefits this work will deliver a significant boost to the ACT construction sector by creating more than 2,500 jobs over the life of the program.
