Nature Play grants encourage Canberra kids outdoors

Released 25/07/2017

Running, climbing, making mud pies, building and exploring are all part of the great adventures Canberra children can experience with $20,000 awarded in Nature Play CBR Grants to 11 organisations.

The Nature Play CBR Grants assist with new or existing projects that support active living and increase community participation in nature-based outdoor activities and events.

Bunduluk Bush Playgroup is one of the grant recipients and encourages parents and carers to let children explore and use their imaginations as they immerse themselves and at times get very dirty in the different nature reserves within the Canberra region, connecting with nature through unstructured play.

Bunduluk Bush Playgroup will use their $829 grant for first aid training and to purchase an outdoor first aid kit, a large outdoor mat to seat 20 for story time and morning tea, and an outdoor storage system for outdoor play and learning materials.

Launched in July 2016, Nature Play CBR has been incredibly successful connecting children and their families with a range of organisations and resources that offer quality nature-based programs. This helps deliver the ACT Government’s Recreation Vision, Connecting and Building Recreation: a vision for the Territory.

Enjoying time in nature is integral to our health and wellbeing and the ACT Government is committed to ensuring there are plenty of opportunities for Canberrans to participate in active recreation and play to enrich their everyday lives.

Research has shown that opportunities for outdoor play and immersion in nature are essential to the health and wellbeing of children, helping them to develop their full potential.

Participation in nature play has the ability to improve a child’s cognitive flexibility and creativity, boost self-esteem and improve resilience, and many children enjoy exploring the world around them.
