Crisis accommodation over the holiday period

Released 25/07/2017

Tackling family and domestic violence remains a key priority focus of the ACT Government and this week, as we have for the last 11 years running, we will begin providing additional services for the holiday period.

The Domestic Violence Christmas Program was developed as a direct response to an increased need for emergency accommodation for families experiencing domestic violence during the holiday season.

The program will target people in immediate need and fear for their safety, or the safety of their family members because of domestic or family violence.

Now in its 12th year of operation, the annual program is run in collaboration between Housing and Community Services, the Domestic Violence Crisis Service and specialist homelessness services, who are all working together to provide innovative crisis responses to meet the needs of Canberrans at risk of domestic and family violence.

The program also offers an alternative accommodation option for the person who has used violence to allow the remainder of the family to stay in their home.

During the time the program has been in operation, 453 people have been accommodated, 3,100 accommodation nights have been provided and a total of 7,475 bed nights have been supplied.

The Domestic Violence Christmas Program begins on Friday and will operate until Friday 27 January 2017.

If anyone in the community is experiencing domestic or family violence during the Christmas/New Year period I encourage them to contact the crisis line which is a 24-hour service on 6280 0900.
