Released 25/07/2017

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Yvette Berry, today joined with students to officially open the new $1.073 million flexible outdoor learning space at Belconnen High School, as well as mark the completion of Stage 1 of the school’s refurbishment project.

“The ACT Government made a 2012 Election Commitment to modernise Belconnen High School into a contemporary learning environment through marrying levels of redevelopment and refurbishment over the next 2.5 years,” Minister Berry said.

“These current refurbishment works have delivered modern learning spaces, and created a welcoming environment for students to be challenged, engaged and excited about.”

$2.25 million was allocated to complete Stage 1 of the two-stage refurbishment. Stage 1 included the demolition of a building, creation and conversion of indoor learning spaces, landscape improvements as well as the flexible outdoor learning space.

“The external learning environment features new shade structures, seating, irrigated grass areas, a synthetic sports area, and landscaping.

“Over $17 million has been committed to Stage 2 of the construction. The ACT’s success in delivering a first rate education system will continue to be supported at Belconnen High School through new student learning and teaching spaces that respond to the learning needs and style of the innovative and global students of today.

“The completed and future works will provide secondary students in the Belconnen area an opportunity to learn in upgraded spaces, designed to facilitate the best educational outcomes, and with a focus on creative environments that promote learning,” concluded Minister Berry.
