This is My Brave: Community stories tackle mental health stigma

Released 25/07/2017

Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury will tonight open the Australian premier of This is My Brave at the Tuggeranong Arts Centre.

Minister Rattenbury said the mission of This is My Brave is to give those in our community a platform to tell their stories of living successful and full lives, alongside the challenges of mental illness. The cast and crew of This is My Brave are local Canberrans who are either living with, or caring for, someone with a mental health condition.

“In Canberra, a significant proportion of the community will experience or know someone who will experience mental illness at some time throughout their lives,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“We can all play a role in reducing stigma around mental illness by encouraging those around us to seek help when they need it. There’s no shame in asking for help where we need it.

“I would like to congratulate the cast and crew of This is My Brave for their contributions to such a valuable event. Performances such as this bring important issues into the spotlight, help to establish a broader conversation within our community and encourage others to share their stories.

“The ACT Government recognises the impact mental illness can have on people in our community, which is why we created a dedicated ministerial portfolio for Mental Health, and are in the process of establishing an Office of Mental Health and developing new targets for suicide reduction.”

This is My Brave will be performed at Tuggeranong Arts Centre, with all money raised going towards producing the show and to Menslink ACT. For more information visit: http://menslink.org.au/events/this-is-my-brave-the-show/.
