Released 14/01/2016

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Shane Rattenbury, today joined Belinda Clark from Cricket Australia and Cameron French from Cricket ACT to promote the U18 National Female Cricket Championships and kick off several weeks of cricket in the capital.

“It’s going to be an exciting few weeks in Canberra with the U18 Women’s Championships on now until the 19th of January, the upcoming Men’s One Day International on 20th January and the Female One Day International on 2nd February,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“Competitions like the U18 Championships are really inspiring as we see the future Ellyse Perry and Meg Lanning climbing the ranks in the sport.  I think it’s also a great opportunity for other junior competitors to see their peers go on to achieve success in the sport.

“It is particularly exciting to see the recent growth in women’s cricket, not only in terms of participation levels but in terms of media coverage and recognition.

“I’m really pleased that the ACT has been given the opportunity to host both the U18 Female National Cricket Championships and the Women’s ODI in February, and I would really encourage Canberrans to come along to the games and experience the excitement of women’s cricket first hand.

Cricket ACT CEO Cameron French said “In a season that will feature the Southern Stars we are delighted to welcome the best female junior cricketers to the Nation’s Capital. We are determined to make the ACT the number 1 destination in Australia for cricket carnivals and thank the ACT Government for their ongoing investment to ensure we have the highest quality facilities for competition.”

“We also recognise and thank our local clubs for their support of events like these championships. They are always willing to assist and it is greatly appreciated by all in cricket.”

“These Championships provide a wonderful avenue for Australia’s future female cricket stars to demonstrate their skills and abilities to progress through the pathway and become an Australian Southern Star” French said.
