Summit to support future thinkers and leaders

Released 11/04/2016

Minister for Education, Shane Rattenbury, today officially launched the Google Apps for Education Summit 2016 at Gungahlin College, the second of its kind in Canberra and only the sixth such event across Australia.

The Google Apps for Education Summit 2016 is a two-day seminar, which is being attended by over 250 educators from Public, Catholic and Independent schools in the Canberra region, and focuses on integrating Google Apps for Education into schools across the ACT.

“Today is great opportunity for local educators to collaborate and share best practice in a range of Google tools to promote student learning,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The Education Directorate partnered with the Edtech Team to host this event and it is a great professional learning opportunity designed to support and inspire schools in their adoption and use of Google Apps for Education.”

The Google Education Summit featured speakers from around the world including international keynote speakers Jim Sill, Director of Global Development for Edtech, and Lisa Highfill, an internationally recognised leader for the implementation of Google Apps in schools. The Summit also included presentations from a range of local and interstate educators.

“Google Apps has the potential to change the culture of learning and teaching in the education sector. Students can work collaboratively online on shared projects, receive instant feedback from teachers and peers, and teachers can even access a student’s homework if a student is absent.

“Technology is transforming the way that people interact with each other and the world, and it is important that our students develop skills and understandings to help them find their place in this world.

“Using a platform like Google gives educators and students access to a boundless range of information and the tools to understand and use it. There are endless possibilities for how it is applied to support quality innovative teaching in our schools.

“Educators recognise and support the balanced use of digital learning in preparing the thinkers of the future. I would like to thank all educators who are dedicated transforming the students of today into the innovative and global leaders of tomorrow,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.
