Design competition for new funky and functional bike racks

Released 25/07/2017

Minister for Territory and Municipal Services, Shane Rattenbury, today launched a competition calling on local artists to design bike racks that not only serve the purpose of bike parking but also brighten our streetscapes.

“Local artists and design professionals are invited to take part in a competition to create an eye catching bike rack that is beautiful, durable and functional,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Each of the four successful designs will be provided with a $10,000 budget to have their bike racks manufactured.

“We are looking for four bike racks for installation in Belconnen, Dickson, Kingston and Tuggeranong to increase end–of-trip facilities in these town and group centres.

“The designs will be selected by a panel of judges which will include local landscape architects and a representative from the art community.  Aside from the artistic aspects, the judging criteria will include factors such as the number of bikes the rack can hold, ease of use and the ongoing maintenance requirements.

“This is an exciting opportunity for local artists to come up with some funky and innovative designs that could eventually end up as a functional piece of infrastructure in our city.

“The bike racks will be a great addition to our local shopping precincts that will not only support cycling across Canberra but will also contribute to the character of the area.

“To manage Canberra’s growth, alleviate congestion and protect our liveability, we need to improve our public transport system and enhance active travel opportunities.

“The ACT Government is integrating active travel with public transport connections, making it even easier to walk and ride around Canberra with great initiatives such as this one in conjunction with path improvements in our centres,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.

Details on the competition and eligibility are available on the TAMS website at www.tams.act.gov.au. The competition is open until 18 March 2016.
