Everybody needs good neighbours

Released 01/03/2018

Neighbourhood Day 2018 was launched in the ACT today, with a reminder to connect with people nearby in your community and reflect on this year’s theme of supportive neighbourhoods for children and young people.

Neighbourhood Day, held on 25 March, is Australia’s annual celebration of community, where people are encouraged to connect with those living nearby.

A connected community is a safe community, and whether over a cup of tea, a picnic in the park or a message of support, this is a fantastic opportunity to make meaningful connections with others in our community.

This year’s theme is the importance of a supportive neighbourhood for children and young people.

Children and young people thrive in an environment of supportive and caring relationships, so it is important for young Canberrans to feel safe, supported and valued in our neighbourhoods and suburbs.

Knowing a trusted neighbour and feeling comfortable in your local environment can be a real benefit to children and young people as it reduces the likelihood of social exclusion and loneliness.

As Canberra continues to grow, Neighbour Day is a great reminder that we all need to take time to reconnect with our neighbours and welcome new people into our community. I encourage everyone to get involved in any events held around Canberra in the lead up to and on Neighbour Day.

The ACT Government and Relationships Australia have worked together to create calling cards and Neighbour Day event invitations to help you connect with your neighbours. These are available at http://neighbourday.org/resources/neighbour-day-kit
