Supporting Social Inclusion for People with Disability

Released 26/10/2017

$25,000 has been awarded to nine Canberra community organisations to run events and programs promoting awareness and inclusion of people with disability under the 2017 I-Day grants program.

I-Day is the International Day of People with Disability and is held on 3 December every year to acknowledge and celebrate the contribution, skills and achievements of people with disability.

I-Day grants enable individuals and organisations to celebrate I-Day by assisting them to put on events that provide people with disability the opportunity to showcase their contributions and achievements to the wider community.

Most importantly, the funding encourages people with disability and the wider community to socialise in a relaxed, inclusive environment and build ongoing connections through dance, sport, art and conversation.

On behalf of the ACT Government, I am proud to provide grants to support events and programs that aim to promote awareness and inclusion. I encourage people with disability, their friends and family plus the wider community to attend as many I-Day events as possible.

Upcoming highlights of this year’s I-Day events include:

  • a game and panel to talk about health and disability with ACTCOSS;
  • the chance to dance like no one is watching at the No Lights, No Lycra Lightly Lit event;
  • an explosion of art and other inclusive creative programs at the Belconnen Arts Centre 3 day event DETONATE with art, music, film, dance and singing; and
  • a terrific insert to be published in the Canberra Times.
