Local community organisations go digital with new grants

Released 22/08/2017

The ACT Government is supporting local community organisations to establish or enhance their digital capacity with $125,000 of new grants. Nearly 40 organisations across Canberra have received funding under this year’s Participation (Digital Communities) Grants Program.

I congratulate all of the successful applicants. Once again these recipients are a testament to Canberra’s vibrant and inclusive community organisations.

Some of the successful recipients for this grant round are:

  • Indigenous Reading Project, to support capacity building
  • Tuggeranong Link of Community Houses and Centres ACT, to upgrade their ICT
  • Ginninderra Catchment Group, to enhance their Frogwatch data portal
  • The ACT Deafness Resource Centre, to enable their website for mobile use

I was also pleased to note that many of the applications came from Canberra’s diverse multicultural community.

Funding to representative groups, and service providers such as the Migrant and Refugee Settlement Services of the ACT, FINACT Inc, the Ethnic Broadcasters Council of the ACT, the Canberra Islamic Centre enable these key cultural and community institutions to ensure they can better communicate and connect with each other and the broader Canberra community.

For example, the ACT Tongan Language and Cultural School will now be able to record and upload language classes for students and those listening on community radio. It will also be able to introduce technology to older members of the community and provide translated information to the local community via radio and online.

These grants demonstrate the ACT Government’s ongoing commitment to ensure that all Canberrans can reach out, share culture and participate in Canberra’s civic life.

A full list of recipients is available on request and further information is on the Community Services Directorate’s website.
