An exhibition celebrating the history, culture and achievements of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people was launched today as part of NAIDOC Celebrations.

The NAIDOC Community Art Exhibition Our Languages Matter at the Community Services #1 Gallery in Narrabundah includes works by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists currently detained in the Alexander Maconochie Centre and Community Corrections clients.

This year’s NAIDOC theme emphasises the unique role language plays through story and song in Aboriginal and Torres Strait islander cultural identity, history, spirituality and rites.

This wonderful exhibition is an ideal opportunity for all Canberrans to join together in celebrating the culture, history and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

It also demonstrates the importance of preserving Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages.

Most of the works will be on sale to the public, with proceeds going towards supporting the artists’ rehabilitation and assisting their reintegration into the community.

I encourage everyone to attend the gallery either during weekdays or on a Saturday to see the artwork on display, and to support other NAIDOC week activities across Canberra.

The NAIDOC Community Art Exhibition is a working partnership between ACT Corrective Services and Community Services #1.
