New ACT Government Office for Disability officially launched

Released 25/07/2017

The ACT Government is staying in the business of supporting people with disability and making sure they are included and engaged in every facet of life in our great city.

The ACT was the first jurisdiction to transition to the National Disability Insurance Scheme, and we’re committed to ensuring that more people with disability are able to gain the supports they need in their everyday lives.

But we know that the NDIS is only one part of a bigger picture.

That’s why we’ve established the ACT Government Office for Disability, which I formally launched last night at the Chief Minister’s Inclusion Awards.

The Office will provide a focal point for our ongoing work to ensure that Canberra becomes an even more inclusive and engaging city for people with disability.

Last night’s inclusion awards highlighted the capacity and great work already being done by individuals, businesses and the community sector.

The Office for Disability will continue to support the ACT’s commitments under the National Disability Strategy through the Involve campaign.

It will also oversee a new grants program for community organisations to help them include people with disability in their activities.

In addition, the Office will work with advocacy groups and with the Disability Reference Group to take forward priority initiatives, such as the Disability Justice Strategy.

The new Office for Disability will work with the announced Office of Mental Health to ensure we take a coordinated approach to supporting and including people right across our community.

I look forward to working with the Office for Disability and the Disability Reference Group to continue to progress the ACT Labor Government’s strong social inclusion agenda.
