System-wide review of ACT health data and reporting to be undertaken

Released 14/02/2017

A comprehensive, system-wide review of ACT Health data and reporting processes will be undertaken to ensure data management and quality assurance processes are robust and accurate.

Minister for Health Meegan Fitzharris said the delivery of quality health services to the Canberra community was the ACT Government’s number one priority, however the accuracy of data continues to be a concern and must be resolved.

“First and foremost I want to reassure the Canberra community that these data reporting issues are administrative in nature and do not affect the quality of the health services that we deliver,” said Minister Fitzharris.

“The ACT Government has been open with the community about these issues, and as previously advised, ACT Health has been in the process of reviewing its data governance and protocols to ensure its robustness, integrity and accuracy, as it should.

“Unfortunately ACT Health has continued to identify issues with its data and reporting. This is disappointing, and has meant ACT Health have been unable to meet certain data reporting deadlines.

“It’s clear ACT Health needs more time to ensure their data management and quality assurances processes are robust and accurate. That’s why today I have announced a comprehensive, system-wide review that will take us back to basics when it comes to the collection, analysis and reporting of our health data.

“This review will investigate the extent of the problems and review ACT Health’s governance and protocols in relation to the management of its data. This is a complex issue, and we must ensure that ACT Health resolves its data management issues for all future reporting and corrects any issues with past data.

“Our community expects a high quality health system, but it also expects that we have the right data and reporting processes in place to help monitor and track our performance.

“Ongoing work to improve data quality processes is a priority for this government, and we will continue to be open with the community about progress in these matters. This will include quarterly reporting to the ACT Legislative Assembly, and updating the ACT Auditor-General on our progress.

“This review will aim to ensure that not only do we have a high quality health system that Canberrans trust, but also that we have the right data available to us to monitor and track our performance.

“We should all be proud of the quality health care system we have here in the ACT. This Government has a ten year health plan and will continue to make sure everyone in our community gets access to health care when and where they need it,” said Minister Fitzharris.
