New fitness stations for Yarralumla’s Alexandrina Drive lakeside trail

Released 21/03/2017

Inner South residents and all those who walk, jog or cycle around Lake Burley Griffin will soon have the opportunity to incorporate different strength and stretching exercises into their fitness routine with new fitness equipment now being installed along Alexandrina Drive.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said this upgrade will provide a modern outdoor fitness circuit along the popular track that will allow anyone to do a fun, free workout while enjoying some of the most picturesque views in Canberra.

“The current Yarralumla fitness circuit has been in need of a spruce up for some time. Late last year we asked the community what type of equipment they’d like to see along the trail, and I’m pleased to say almost all the existing fitness circuit along Alexandrina Drive will be replaced with exciting new equipment as selected by the community,” said Minister Fitzharris.

“The community told us what their preferred exercises were, which included push-ups (64 per cent), chin ups (60 per cent), body curls (40 per cent), step ups and sit ups (32 per cent), and tricep dips (20 per cent).

“The new circuit will provide the equipment required for these exercises and will feature a new surface under each new piece of equipment and signage at all sites with instructions on how to use everything.

“Outdoor fitness equipment is another way the ACT Government is encouraging active and healthy lifestyles here in Canberra,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.

Construction will be complete in May 2017.
