The first stage of duplication along Horse Park Drive is now complete and open to traffic, improving safety, easing congestion and significantly upgrading walking and cycling infrastructure on this important arterial road.
The 2.4km section between Well Station Drive and Anthony Rolfe Avenue was completed under budget and eight weeks ahead of schedule.
“This $22.4 million project was an important investment in Canberra’s transport infrastructure,” Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris said.
“Along with the ongoing duplication of other parts of Horse Park Drive, this will significantly reduce congestion, improve traffic flow to and from Gungahlin and improve conditions for cyclists and pedestrians.”
“This duplication also provides improved traffic flow and safer access to nearby suburbs including Harrison and the new suburb of Throsby through upgrades to intersections at Anthony Rolfe Avenue, Mapleton Avenue and Well Station Drive.”
The duplication works also included:
- Improved pedestrian facilities at the three upgraded intersections.
- A new three-metre wide shared-use path on the Throsby side of Horse Park Drive, between Anthony Rolfe Avenue and Well Station Drive.
- Two new bridges on Horse Park Drive at Gungaderra Creek with a pedestrian and cycle underpass linking Throsby with Harrison.
- On-road cycle lanes.
- Indented bus stops adjacent to the north and southbound carriageways.
“This section of duplication has been opened up to traffic as soon as possible to help reduce congestion during peak periods, but some minor works will still occur over the next few weeks,” Minister Fitzharris said.
“Work continues on two other sections of Horse Park Drive duplication. The full duplication between Mulligans Flat Road and the Federal Highway is expected to be completed late next year.”
