Consultation starts on light rail stop designs

Released 12/05/2017

With construction of the light rail corridor from Gungahlin to the City well under way, the ACT Government is inviting the community to get have their say on the proposed detailed design of the light rail stops along the route.

“The ACT Government is excited to announce the proposed design of the 12 light rail stops to be built from Gungahlin Place terminus to Elouera Street, Braddon,” Minster for Transport Canberra and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“The light rail network will form of a significant part of our city’s future and we want to ensure that the permanent stops have a design that is functional and in keeping with the Canberra area.”

“Key elements of the stop designs include seating as well as ticketing facilities. Customers of all abilities will be well served through elements such as hearing induction loops, auditory announcements, digital information displays, accessible ramps, level boarding to light rail vehicles and tactile indicators. Security has also been considered through the provision of lighting, closed circuit television cameras and help points.

“Artwork will be part of the light rail stops. Weather screens will incorporate the design work of Canberra artist, Hannah Quinlivan. Ms Quinlivan was selected from a range of eminent Australian artists to collaborate with architects to generate a specific artwork for use in the project.

A Works Approval Application has been lodged with the NCA and a Development Application Amendment with the ACT Planning and Land Authority for stops in the respective jurisdictions.

The NCA’s Chief Executive, Malcolm Snow, said the design of the light tram stops will be open for public consultation and comment until Friday 2 June 2017.

“As one of the major approaches to the Central National Area, it’s important the light rail network along Northbourne Avenue contributes to the design quality of Australia’s National Capital,” Mr Snow said.

From tomorrow Canberrans can access and comment on either application via the Transport Canberra website at www.transport.act.gov.au with artist impressions of the stop designs for the Dickson Interchange, Macarthur Avenue and Gungahlin terminus also on display.

“The light rail stop at the Alinga Street terminus in the City is not included in this Works Approval and will be proposed soon as part of a separate future public exhibition,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.
