Construction at University of Canberra Public Hospital progressing well

Released 10/08/2017

Construction of Canberra’s first dedicated public rehabilitation hospital is well underway to deliver sub-acute rehabilitation and mental health care services for Canberrans.

ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr, Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris and Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury today visited the University of Canberra Public Hospital (UCHPH) to assess the ongoing works.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing, Meegan Fitzharris said the internal works of the building were now starting to take shape, including flooring, fixtures and glazing.

“It was exciting to tour Level Two of the UCPH facility for the first time, as well as seeing some of the back of house facilities, including the kitchens that will eventually make 925 meals per day for patients,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“The UCPH will make a positive impact on the lives of thousands of people living in and around the ACT and it’s pleasing to see the structure looking more and more like a world class public health facility.”

Since work at the UCPH site began in March 2016, construction to date has seen:

  • More than 500,000 hours of labour and 55,000 hours of training;
  • 10,000m2 of façade installed;
  • 2600m2 of windows installed;
  • 1000 doors installed; and
  • Around 300 workers on site every day.

“The $212 million hospital will help to strengthen the ACT’s health system by providing dedicated rehabilitation services for both physical and mental health,” Minister Fitzharris said.

Once complete, UCPH will be the largest rehabilitation centre in the ACT providing 140 inpatient beds, 75 day places, and additional outpatient services that cater for people recovering from an injury, surgery or a mental health condition.

“We are stepping up our efforts to ensure that those in need of mental health services can access the right services, at the right time,” Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury said.

“We’ve seen significant progress here today, and I look forward to the completion of the UCPH facility.”
