Active Travel upgrades improve Canberra’s suburbs

Released 04/05/2017

Age-friendly upgrades to local suburban infrastructure in Kaleen and Monash will provide better outcomes for residents, especially older residents.

Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris, today announced the start of construction to improve pathways, crossings and traffic islands in Canberra’s north and south.“

As part of the age-friendly suburbs program we launched in 2016, these improvements provide better access to our local shops for everyone, but especially young and old people who may have some mobility challenges,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“These works follow similar successful improvements to Ainslie and Weston. The improvements to active travel in all four of these Canberra suburbs will benefit everyone in the community, especially older Canberrans or those with disabilities.

“We know that when our suburban infrastructure works for older people, it works for everyone, so we are really pleased to get this work underway after great community input in 2016.”

The upgrades in Kaleen will include:

  • Upgrading the path between the childcare centre and Kaleen Plaza along Georgina Crescent
  • Upgrading the path between the shared path south of Rubicon Street and the car park in front of the Kaleen Community Hall
  • Upgrading the existing crossing across Maribyrnong Avenue in front of Kaleen Plaza
  • Upgrading the paths and crossings across Gwydir Square

The upgrades in Monash will include:

  • Upgrading the path between Goodwin Village and Monash Shops along Cockcroft Avenue
  • Upgrading the path between Goodwin Village and Monash Shops along nearby public opens east of Cockcroft Avenue
  • Upgrading the path between Cockcroft Avenue and Cowdery Place
  • Pram crossings and refuge islands associated with these three paths

“The ACT Government has already taken steps towards becoming more age-friendly by joining the World Health Organisation Global network of Age-friendly Cities and Communities,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“This $750,000 project will see infrastructure upgrades to prepare our streets and public places.”

The ACT Government conducted extensive community consultation to inform designs and ensure the improvements to walking and cycling infrastructure met the needs of these communities.
