$2.7 million in health promotion grants now open

Released 19/03/2018

Canberra community groups, not-for-profit organisations and school communities are now able to apply for funding as part of the ACT Health Promotion Grants Program, which opened on Monday.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris, said $2.7 million in funding was available for the Healthy Canberra Grants Program and the Health Promotion Innovation Fund.

"The ACT Government is committed to tackling the significant burden of chronic disease that affects our community, to help keep Canberrans healthy and well,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“As part of this commitment we want to work directly with the community, to get them involved and develop innovative ways to encourage a more healthy and active Canberra. This is all part of our approach to make sure Canberra stays Australia’s healthiest city.

“Both the Healthy Canberra Grants and the Health Promotion Innovation Fund support community-based programs with a focus on healthy ageing, reducing smoking and alcohol related harms, and tackling overweight and obesity.

“As our population ages, it’s important to encourage older people to maintain positive physical activity and eating habits. We know that physical activity and healthy eating contribute to reductions in overweight and obesity. For older people, physical activity also helps maintain strength, balance and positive cognitive function.

“Smoking and alcohol related harms, and overweight and obesity are a preventable and significant cause of poor health and that is why investing in initiatives that will make a lasting, positive difference in the community is a key priority for the government.

“I strongly encourage all community groups, not-for-profit organisations and school communities to check out the ACT Health website for further information on the grants or come along to the information session on 28 November,” Minister Fitzharris said.

The information session for potential applicants will be held on Tuesday 28 November 2017, from 3-4pm, at ACT Health Training and Conference Centre, 2-6 Bowes Street, Phillip.

Healthy Canberra Grants are offered for large-scale programs that improve health across the ACT population.

The Health Promotion Innovation Fund provides an opportunity for smaller-scale, one year grants to trial innovative health promotion projects.
