VW Drive for the Community raises funds for teen mental health

Released 01/05/2016

The Volkswagen Drive for the Community event held today attracted Volkswagen enthusiasts from Canberra and surrounding regions raising funds for Canberra Hospital’s ‘Tuning into Teens’ mental health program.

Assistant Health Minister Meegan Fitzharris drew the three lucky winners of the Volkswagen Drive for the Community Raffle, who will each share in a total prize pool worth almost $16,000. This year’s prizes included:

  • 1st Prize valued at $12,000, a trip for two to Germany, including airline tickets, accommodation, a tour of the Autostadt automotive exhibition and $2,000 spending money.
  • 2nd Prize valued at $3,000 Gift voucher for bike of your choice from Pushys Fyshwick.
  • 3rd Prize valued at $1,000 worth of Coles Group and Myer Gift Cards.

“This year’s Volkswagen’s Drive for the Community convoy included over ninety entrants, each showcasing their much loved Volkswagen cars on the drive that started and ended at Thoroughbred Park,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“On behalf of the Canberra Hospital Foundation, I am extremely grateful to the Canberra community and especially to Peter Munday, Dealer Principal at Lennock Volkswagen, Volkswagen Group Australia and Gerald Slaven Motors, for generously supporting this event and contributing in such a huge way to help make this venture a reality.

“Across Australia, 1 in 4 young people have experienced a mental health condition in the past 12 months, which is why supporting the ‘Tuning into Teens’ program is such a worthwhile and important cause so we can help to minimise adolescent mental health issues in our community .

“The program is designed to provide parents and carers with a greater understanding of their teen's emotional experiences, teaching skills that can assist parents and carers in being supportive, empathetic and staying connected.

“The adolescent years are an important stage of a young person’s life, and it’s imperative that community and public health services are available to support them, at every age and every stage.

“Today’s event is a fun family day, but it’s also an opportunity for the community to give back and support young people in Canberra. It’s been great to see so many supporters in their classic or vintage Volkswagen models taking part, and I thank every one of you for your generous contributions

“It was also wonderful to meet four nurses at the event today who are here from Fiji to learn new skills for three months at Canberra Hospital. I hope they enjoy their time here in Canberra,” Minister Fitzharris said.

The results of the 2016 Volkswagen Drive for the Community Raffle will be published online at: www.canberrahospitalfoundation.org.au.
