Local businesses developing Fresh Tastes with Canberra’s kids

Released 05/09/2016

Businesses from across Canberra are partnering with 69 ACT primary schools to support healthy learning environments through the Fresh Tastes program, Assistant Health Minister Meegan Fitzharris said today.

Fresh Tastes is an ACT Government initiative that supports a healthy food and drink environment in local primary schools and improves children’s access to knowledge and uptake of healthy food and drink.

“I’m pleased to say we have 23 local businesses and organisations engaged with the Fresh Tastes Program, including partners in gardening, kitchenware, fresh produce, nutrition, online ordering and educational supplies,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Having such a variety of businesses and organisations involved ensures our participating schools are able to access a range of resources.

“For example, the Green Shed provides primary schools with free building materials to help create healthy learning environments, such as vegetable gardens.

“These partnerships are essential to tackle the complex challenge of childhood obesity by helping to encourage healthy lifestyles in our young people.

“They also complement the Government’s work to engage businesses to help promote healthier food and drink options through the Choose Healthier program, to which we have committed an additional $200,000 over the next two years.

“I would like to thank the local community organisations and businesses that have partnered with Fresh Tastes since the program was launched in 2014.

“It’s also important to thank the canteen managers at our schools; they work tirelessly to improve canteen menus. In recent years, we have seen a reduction in unhealthy items on the school canteen menu and an increase of healthy choices. As a mum, I know it’s important for my kids learning that they have healthy food and drink throughout the day.

  • “I would encourage all ACT primary schools to find out more about Fresh Tastes and sign up to help encourage healthier lifestyles amongst all Canberra kids,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.

Fresh Tastes forms part of the ACT Government’s Healthy Weight Initiative, supporting a healthy, active and productive community
