Canberrans are taking up the offer of conveniently receiving their flu vaccines from ACT pharmacists in significant numbers as winter takes hold.
ACT pharmacies have provided flu vaccinations to 3,419 people so far this winter and aim to reach 4,000 Canberrans by the end of July, Assistant Health Minister Meegan Fitzharris said.
Earlier this year, the ACT Government changed the Medicines, Poisons and Therapeutic Goods Regulation 2008 to allow pharmacists to administer vaccinations to adult patients without a prescription.
“Allowing pharmacists to administer the influenza vaccine is a strong improvement to public health by offering Canberrans a range of ways to access this important vaccination,” Minister Fitzharris said.
“So far, 26 pharmacies across the ACT have been trained to administer vaccinations against influenza in line with the ACT Vaccination Standards and the response from the pharmacy sector to the changes in regulation has been pleasing to see.
“Vaccinations from pharmacies are complementing existing immunisation services that are available across the ACT, including through general practitioners, other primary health providers and workplace vaccination programs.”
