A celebration of Canberra’s urban forest

Released 02/05/2016

Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris today joined students from Lyneham High School to plant a tree at the Lyneham Commons Food Forest for the launch of Canberra Tree Week 2016.

“Canberra Tree Week, from Monday 2 May to Sunday 8 May 2016, is a celebration of the great contribution trees make to our city, for both their aesthetic and environmental benefits,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Canberra Tree Week is a great opportunity to make the most of the fresh autumn weather via the range of tree themed activities that have been organised throughout the next few days.

“A highlight will be the unique National Tree Climbing Championships which are being held in Canberra from Friday 6 May until Sunday 8 May 2016.

“There’s plenty for everyone to get involved in, including library craft activities for the kids and guided walks in Namadgi National Park.

“Other activities include poetry based tours and art exhibitions at the National Arboretum Canberra, guided walks at Haig Park and ANU and native tree planting workshops at the Australian National Botanic Gardens.

“Trees are a vital asset for our city due to their countless environmental benefits, like cleaning our air, regulating the temperature and providing habitat for our bird species and fauna. But they are also a visual reminder of the four very distinct seasons we experience in Canberra.

“The ACT Government manages over 750,000 trees in our urban space, one of the largest urban forests in Australia, and works hard to keep the trees healthy and safe for our community.

“While we do have to manage our trees appropriately, and that means pruning or removing them when they become unsafe or are dead or decaying, we know how important they are to the Canberra community and we are committed to ensuring Canberra has a beautiful urban forest for many years to come,” Minister Fitzharris said.
