Justice Penfold retires after distinguished service

Released 23/03/2018

The Hon Justice Hilary Penfold PSM QC was today congratulated and farewelled by Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay and members of the ACT legal community at a ceremonial sitting of the ACT Supreme Court.

“Today marks the end of a long and distinguished legal career in the Territory, Minister Ramsay said.

“I would like to personally thank Justice Penfold for the substantial contribution she has made to law and justice during her 10 years on the bench of the ACT Supreme Court.”

Justice Penfold was appointed in 2008 following a distinguished career as a former Commonwealth public servant. She was the Commonwealth’s first female Parliamentary Counsel for ten years and then appointed as Secretary of the newly-formed Department of Parliamentary Services.

“Justice Penfold, as the first female Resident Judge of the Supreme Court, is without question one of the most remarkable and pioneering lawyers in the history of the ACT legal profession,” Minister Ramsay said.

“Her enormous contribution to the work of this court and her legacy in the application of the
Human Rights Act 2004, as well as the practical improvement of the court’s case management system is significant.

“Justice Penfold is also a role model for many women lawyers, offering guidance, encouragement and inspiration to the next generation of female lawyers as patron of the Women Lawyers Association ACT.

“On behalf of the ACT Government, I thank Justice Penfold for her dedicated service and wish her well in her retirement.”
