Canberra Museum and Gallery celebrates 20 years of art and history

Released 23/03/2018

A free exhibition featuring almost 200 works of art is now on display for the 20th anniversary of the Canberra Museum and Gallery.

Minister for the Arts and Community Events, Gordon Ramsay, officially opened Celebration: 20 years of collecting visual art at CMAG today, an exhibition celebrating the artists, arts workers, donors and supporters who have made CMAG’s collection possible.

“This year marks the 20th anniversary of the organisation, which has built an impressive collection of more than 6,500 objects celebrating visual arts and documenting the social and cultural history of our region,” Minister Ramsay said.

“The Gallery collection is remarkable, not only for the artistry and insight inherent to the individual objects it holds, but also for the rich patterns of connection that can be drawn between them.

“An exhibition such as this would not exist without the creative vision and labour of more than 100 artists who have created these objects, the trusted teachers and mentors they have worked alongside, and the community of support that surrounds them.

“It is critically important also to recognise the many generous donors who have gifted works of art and funds to help grow the Gallery collection.”

Visitors to this and other exhibitions will be able to see objects on display in even richer colour and detail, due to new state-of-the-art LED lighting in the Gallery made possible through funding in the 2017-18 ACT Budget.

“The ACT Government is proud to have been able to support the exhibition through the funding we provide CMAG. Congratulations to CMAG’s curatorial and installation teams for achieving such an impressive display,” Minister Ramsay said.

“I encourage both Canberrans and visitors to enjoy this wonderful exhibition, and the insight it provides into the breathtaking visual art of our region.”

Former Cultural Facilities Corporation Chairman and well-known arts patron, Mr John Hindmarsh AM, announced extra private funding at the exhibition opening, to support artists exhibiting in the Gallery’s newly named Hindmarsh Project Space in Civic Square. The funding will help create even bolder works of art through materials support and enhanced promotion.

Celebration: 20 years of collecting visual art at CMAG will be on display from 24 March 2018 until 17 June 2018. For More information, visit www.cmag.com.au.
