Glass exchange brings the best of Japan’s artistic expression to Canberra

Released 25/07/2017

The Minister for the Arts and Community Events Gordon Ramsay announced today that Japanese glass artist Ms Ayano Yoshizumi will travel to Canberra to complete a six-week residency at the Canberra Glassworks as part of the 2017 Asialink Arts Residency Program.

“This is the second year that the ACT Government has contributed $44,000 to the Asialink Arts Residency Program. This allows us to participate in the Reciprocal Residency Program and send a Canberra artist to Japan,” Mr Ramsay said.

“Ms Yoshizumi will be in Canberra from 13 June to 25 July as part of this exchange, and it is fantastic to have such an experienced and creative international glass artist in Canberra.

During her residency, Ms Yoshizumi will create a series of new objects at the Canberra Glassworks. Using intense colour to depict light and space, she treats her sculptures like three-dimensional canvases.

“Glassblowing is absolutely fascinating to watch, and I encourage Canberrans to check out the Glassworks’ hotshop calendar to see Ms Yoshizumi hard at work during her residency,” Mr Ramsay said.

Local artist, Mr Sui Jackson will travel to Japan on 5 April for six weeks to take up a residency at the Toyama Glass Studio, where Ms Yoshizumi is usually based. Mr Jackson’s art expresses the living natural world in a mass-produced environment using industrial processes and recycled material to create pieces in glass and ceramic. Mr Jackson will exhibit his created works at Toyama Glass Art Museum from 10 to 13 May 2017.

The 2017 Asialink Arts Residency Program will also support local artist Ms Anna Madeleine who will travel to Bandung, Indonesia where she will be hosted by the Common Room Networks Foundation from July to October of this year. Ms Madeleine will focus on developing a new experimental immersive installation that explores cultural, artistic and scientific perception of anatomy and the body.
