Bringing the community closer to the legal system

Enhancing the ACT community’s participation in the legal system is a key focus of this year’s Law Week, Attorney-General Gordon Ramsay said today.

Marking the start of Law Week, which this year is focusing on ‘Law and Justice in Your Community’, Mr Ramsay highlighted a number of government initiatives working to engage the community in the legal system.

“This year’s theme - ‘your community’ -  emphasises our participation in and our inherent responsibility for, the community around us,” Mr Ramsay said.

“One of Law Week’s primary aims is to engage with the community - to invite them to be involved in , be aware of and feel ownership towards the protections and responsibilities provided by our laws and justice system.”

Each year, Law Week raises funds for a Canberra charity. Mr Ramsay thanked the Law Society for fundraising on behalf of the Canberra-based Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre this year.  “The Centre fosters community leadership, and has reached thousands of students across Australia to help close the gap between Indigenous and non-indigenous Australians,” said Mr Ramsay.  “It is my hope that these contributions assist in the Australian Indigenous Leadership Centre’s ongoing work towards empowering Australia’s first people and their communities.“

Mr Ramsay also reiterated the ACT Government’s commitment to Community Legal Centres.

“It is often said that a community is best judged by how it treats its most vulnerable. Community Legal Centres play a vital role in ensuring a safety net of legal advice is available to all people across our community,” Mr Ramsay said.
