New Tuggeranong ACTSES facility opens in Calwell

Released 02/03/2018

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman today officially opened the new Tuggeranong ACT State Emergency Service facility in Calwell.

“I am extremely proud to officially open the new Tuggeranong ACT State Emergency Service Unit facility in Calwell,” Mr Gentleman said.

“This state-of-the-art facility replaces the current location for Tuggeranong SES volunteers in the ACT Emergency Services Agency’s old workshop section of the Kambah ACT Fire & Rescue Station.

“The opening of this new station is part of the ACT Emergency Services Agency’s Station Upgrade and Relocation Program, which will improve community safety and ensure that response times are minimised by strategically locating such facilities on or very close to main arterial roads.

“This station will allow the ACT State Emergency Service to better serve the southern area of the ACT from more up-to-date facilities. Our SES volunteers do an excellent job in protecting Canberra, and these new facilities will better support them in the work they do protecting us.

“The new facility also features many environmentally sustainable design initiatives, such as the two large water tanks located on site. These tanks provide rain water to the site, which saves on the use of mains water.

“I congratulate the ESA SURP Team, Kane Constructions and all those who contributed to building this wonderful facility that will serve the Tuggeranong area for many years to come.”

Minister Gentleman also encouraged the community to visit the new facility at the Open Day to be held tomorrow from 10am to 2pm.

“Members of the ACT State Emergency Service will be on hand to provide advice on being prepared for emergencies such as bushfire, storms, floods and medical situations,” Minister Gentleman said.

“This is a great opportunity for residents of Tuggeranong to see the new facility for themselves.”

The Open Day will include:

  • Tours inside of the new ACTSES facility
  • Emergency vehicles on display
  • Exhibits for people of all ages
  • Children’s entertainment including face painting and giant snakes and ladders
  • Free entry and parking.
