Implementing the Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan

Released 02/05/2018

Strategic rezoning in Belconnen’s commercial zones and trades and services area head the list of planning changes aimed at guiding the growth of the Belconnen town centre for the next 10 to 20 years, Minister for Planning and Land Management Mick Gentleman said today.

“Through draft variation 342 to the Territory Plan, the ACT Government is implementing the key recommendations of the Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan, which was finalised in late 2016,” Minister Gentleman said.

“Belconnen residents, local businesses and organisations were very involved in the master planning process through several rounds of consultation.”

This draft variation is one of the outcomes of the approved Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan in setting the directions for the future of Belconnen as an active, diverse and vital town centre serving its residents as well as the residents of the surrounding suburbs. Consultation on this draft variation is now open.

DV342 addresses key urban renewal issues including appropriate density and activation of high use zones. DV342 proposes rezoning several blocks along Lathlain Street from trades and services to commercial business zone and urban open space to promote activity and to revitalise the area to the west of the mall.

The variation introduces building heights up to 27 storeys in selected locations, while accommodating the heights of approved developments in the town centre. A residential area on College Street is rezoned from suburban core to high density residential to expand the existing area of high density residential development close to the town centre.

“Active frontage and awning requirements are to be incorporated in accordance with the master plan to ensure interesting and safe public spaces for pedestrians and to ensure all weather protection in the main pedestrian areas,” Minister Gentleman said.

Member for Ginninderra Tara Cheyne MLA also welcomed the implementation of the Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan.

“As both a local member and a Belconnen town centre resident, it is great to see these important next steps in the implementation of the Belconnen Town Centre Master Plan. This will provide certainty for the future of our town centre and our region for many years to come,” Ms Cheyne said.
