Large high-quality, architecturally designed, precast concrete panels will start arriving in West Basin today to create a 150m-long boardwalk on the southern headland as part of the first stage of the City to the Lake project.
Minister for Urban Renewal Mick Gentleman said people would soon see the boardwalk take shape as the 62 panels, each up to 8.1m long and 2m wide, were positioned just above the water level over the next month.
“The boardwalk, which will be open to public once construction of the adjacent point park is completed later this year, will be an attraction in its own right and will encourage more people to enjoy Lake Burley Griffin,” Minister Gentleman said.
“The boardwalk will create a great space for pedestrians to explore the shore of Lake Burley Griffin. Its generous size allows different types of users to enjoy the environment at their own pace.
“The installation of these panels signals the start of an exciting construction phase at West Basin waterfront where, once completed, the community will have an attractive and vibrant waterfront, creating a space to celebrate and have fun.”
Installation of the panels is expected to be completed by early-April. The adjacent Point Park is expected to be completed in late 2017.
The first stage of the waterfront also includes:
- A protected cove where recreational lake users can berth watercraft.
- Improved access to the waterfront and Commonwealth Park from Commonwealth Avenue.
Standard construction hours for the project will be from 7am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday. There may be some work on Saturdays from 7am to 1pm.
Footpath diversions are in place for people to walk, run and cycle around Lake Burley Griffin during the construction period. For more information please visit www.citytolake.com.au
