The ACT Assembly has passed reforms that will see better consultation with the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community on the naming of streets and suburbs in the Territory.

“We want to ensure that our local Indigenous community has a better opportunity to provide advice on how their words and names are commemorated in the ACT,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The naming of suburbs and streets is a great way of acknowledging and remembering our history. Some recent examples of this include the naming of the Gungahlin suburb Ngunnawal which acknowledges the local Aboriginal heritage of the ACT region.

“The reforms also change the Heritage Act to provide more clarity on heritage matters,” Minister Gentleman said

Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury said the bill includes an amendment to the Energy Efficiency (Cost of Living) Improvement Act 2012 to expand the ability of the ACT Government to share EEIS compliance information with other agencies.

“Better information sharing will help stop possible double counting in other energy efficiency schemes, such as the Commonwealth’s Emissions Reduction Fund, ensuring that the ACT’s energy efficiency improvements are above and beyond those supported under other Federal and state schemes,” Minister Rattenbury said.

The Planning, Building and Environment Legislation Amendment Bill 2017 will take effect later this month.
