Released 07/04/2017

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman today reassured the Canberra community after the murder of a 29-year-old man in Queanbeyan last night.

“As the Minister for Police and Emergency Services I have been briefed on the incidents in Queanbeyan  overnight that led to two people being taken into custody in the ACT,” Minister Gentleman said.

“It is important for Canberrans to be aware that police believe this is an isolated matter, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

“I want to reassure the community that while this incident feels close to home, law enforcement agencies have it in hand and investigations are ongoing.

“ACT Policing have strong well tested plans and resources to effectively respond to any event that threatens the safety of the ACT community, and I have full confidence in their handling of this matter.”

Minister Gentleman encouraged Canberrans to continue to support each other and our neighbours in Queanbeyan.

“The ACT is a harmonious community that celebrates people from all backgrounds and cultures and the ACT Government is strongly committed to working with all community and faith leaders to ensure that our community remains this way,” Minister Gentleman concluded.

As always, ACT Policing encourages the community to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.

Suspicious activity can be reported by calling police on 131 444, or Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000. If the matter is time critical, or an emergency situation dial 000.
