ACT Budget to recruit new firefighters

Released 25/07/2017

Another 16 new firefighters will be recruited and trained as part of this year’s ACT budget, Minister for Police and Emergency Services Mick Gentleman announced today.

The upcoming 2017-18 ACT Budget will invest in a ‘recruit college’ to start later this year, continuing the government’s commitment to recruit more women firefighters and ensuring more firefighters are trained and ready to keep our community safe.

“Delivering our election commitment to run an ACT Fire & Rescue recruit college will ensure that the ACT stays on the front foot in training and providing high-performing firefighters to protect Canberra,” Minister Gentleman said.

“The 16 new firefighters trained and recruited through the college will be in addition to the current recruitment round for qualified, experienced firefighters from interstate.

“The ACT Government is committed to building an emergency services workforce that reflects the diversity of our community, and has an inclusive culture that respects and supports all its members. That’s why we’ll once again set a goal for 50:50 gender balance in this recruit college, following the employment of four female firefighters in the 2016 recruitment process.”

The 2017-18 ACT Budget will see the Government delivering on the commitments we took to the 2016 election on the areas that matter most to Canberrans. We will be investing in better health care through our 10-year health plan, better schools for our children and better services for our suburbs, while making the right investments to renew our city and maintain a strong local economy.
