The ACT Government is asking the community to help refresh the planning framework for the Gungahlin town centre, Minister for Planning and Land Management, Mick Gentleman, announced today.
“The Gungahlin town centre is a thriving place, attracting new residents, business and investment at a great rate, and will soon see the arrival of light rail. The Government is keen for community feedback on how urban planning can help the centre continue to prosper and grow,” Minister Gentleman said.
“This planning refresh will update the 2010 Gungahlin Town Centre Planning Study and will address new planning challenges and opportunities for the centre.
“It will weave in new Government initiatives around urban renewal, healthy weight, active travel and climate change adaptation.
“The planning refresh won’t impact works that are currently underway, but it will open up a community conversation around a number of key issues including building height and character, public places, walking, cycling and road transport.
“Considering these issues is particularly important given recent proposals for more multi-storey development close to the centre, recent work to make Hibberson Street more people-friendly, and the extensive work already done around public transport, especially light rail.
“We want to continue to make the Gungahlin town centre a place that people want to visit and spend time in, not just for the shops, restaurants and services, but the open spaces and community facilities,” Minister Gentleman said.
“We will be asking how we can improve access to the centre for cyclists and pedestrians, as well as private and public transport.
“Following the community engagement and relevant stakeholder meetings, the Government may propose changes to the Territory Plan that will also go through a community engagement process.
“The Gungahlin town centre is integral to the city’s economic growth and diversification. It has the potential for sustainable growth that provides more housing and lifestyle choice for residents and more travel options. However, the centre needs to meet the aspirations of the existing community.
