New Work Safety Commissioner Appointed

Released 25/07/2017

Minister for Workplace Safety and Industrial Relations, Mick Gentleman, today announced the appointment of Mr Greg Jones as the new ACT Work Safety Commissioner.

“Today I’m pleased to announce the appointment of Mr Jones to this very important role.  He brings to the position a wealth of experience in senior public sector management roles and a commitment to community health and safety through his 25 years of regulatory experience in the ACT.”
Minister Gentleman said.

Mr Jones, who takes over from Mark McCabe who retired in February this year, is currently the Director of Regulatory Compliance in Access Canberra’s Construction, Environment and Workplace Protection Division.  He previously held the position of Chief Executive with the ACT Gambling and Racing Commission for over 10 years where he made a significant contribution to regulatory enforcement through education, along with a strong focus on consumer protection.

“Mr Jones will play a pivotal role in setting the strategic direction for workplace safety in the ACT and will no doubt maintain and develop a close working relationship with industry and the unions to ensure the recommendations of the Getting Home Safely report continue to be implemented.  He has already established strong ties with these key stakeholders in his current executive role in Access Canberra.

Mr Jones priorities will also include:

  • Strengthening the ACT Government’s co-ordinated work health and safety compliance and education program;
  • Ensuring the safe demolition of ‘Mr Fluffy’ houses; and
  • Progressing a risk-based approach to regulation to ensure attention is focussed on the areas of greatest harm to the community.

“I’d also like to take this opportunity to thank acting Commissioner Mr Brett Phillips for successfully undertaking the role while the recruitment process was being finalised,” Minister Gentleman concluded.
