Update on Autumn prescribed burn program: 9 March 2018

Released 09/03/2018

The ACT Parks and Conservation Service wishes to advise the community of the latest planned prescribed burn program which is being conducted to reduce fire fuel loads and to improve ecosystem health.

The Autumn schedule of prescribed burns began on Wednesday 7 March with a small burn at Jerrabomberra wetlands and on Thursday 8 March two larger burns were lit at Blue Range and Piccadilly in the west of Namadgi National Park. Monitoring work will continue at these sites for several days.

Friday 9 March 2018

  • The Blue Range and Piccadilly fires in Namadgi are continuing today. Crews will continue to manage and monitor the sites.
  • An 8 hectare ecological burn is underway at Jerrabomberra Grasslands east, adjacent to Lanyon Drive, Hume. Smoke from this burn could impact suburbs in southern Canberra.

For tips on how to stay safe if there is smoke in the area, visit the Asthma Foundation website.

  • A 12 hectare fire hazard reduction is underway at Cooleman Ridge Nature Reserve, off Kathner Street and Darrell Place, Chapman.

Saturday 10 March 2018 and Sunday 11 March 2018

A number of prescribed burns are planned for the weekend. These include:

  • 678 hectare fuel hazard reduction burn at Potters Hill, adjacent to Mt Clear campground in southern Namadgi national park
  • 10 hectare ecological burn at Gungaderra Grassland Nature Reserve, Gungahlin Drive, Palmerston
  • 9 hectare ecological burn at Dunlop Grasslands Nature Reserve, Douglas Waterhouse Drive, Dunlop
  • 9 hectare ecological burn at Mulanggari Grassland Nature Reserve, Gungahlin Drive, Franklin.

ACT Parks and Conservation requests members of the community to please keep well clear of burn sites for their safety as well as that of the firefighters working on site. Smoke from the prescribed burns can cover roads and obscure vision making driving dangerous.

To see the location map of all the burn sites visit the Upcoming Prescribed Burns Page.
